While reading the article ‘Unlearning the Myths That Bind Us’ by Linda Christen she discusses how things we were told about the classroom that aren’t true actually creates knots between us from not only the teacher, but each other. “Many students don’t want to believe that they have been manipulated by children's media or advertising” She discusses how that advertising from television actually causes children to learn about things, whether they wish to or not. Tv shows and movies teach us how to act towards one another in a certain light, how to make a dialogue with fellow humans or how to react if something goes terribly wrong.Though it is not always things we notice, or always bad to watch tv, It actually helps build growth in conversational skills. Though one thing that set me off in the article was when the quote ‘a black Cinderella? Give me a break’ This is a real problem. Children are supposed to be able to have someone they can look up to their lives and imagine being like them. However this quote shows how children of color do not get to have that dream, as the tv shows they watch do not show a ton of people in color, even now it can be rare for adults to be able to relate to a character if they can not see themselves being the character. “Now instead of seeing a bunch of ducks in clothes, they see racism, sexism, and violence” this is another part of the story that frustrates me, I know this is true, as there are a ton of theories out there about children's cartoons. People have begun to take things way too far, it is just a simple children's show in my opinion. Not typically up for discussion unless the trend is reoccurring.
